Cruise Guest Caught Relaxing on Mattress Sparks Privacy Debate

A cruiser takes their bed onto the balcony of Allure of the Seas - cartelmarcel on TikTok
A Royal Caribbean cruiser has gone viral after being filmed relaxing on a rollaway cot set up on their balcony — sparking a heated debate online about passenger privacy at sea.
A video posted to TikTok by user @cartelmarcel shows a guest aboard Allure of the Seas lounging comfortably on a cot with a book in hand while docked at Perfect Day at CocoCay. The clip, which has racked up over 165,000 likes, 2,400 comments, and nearly 2,000 shares, shows the traveler even using one of the balcony chairs as a makeshift nightstand.
“Let People Relax — It’s Their Vacation!”
While some viewers seemed baffled by the sight of a bed outside, most came to the passenger’s defense.
“Imagine judging someone for relaxing on their vacation that they paid for 😬🙄,” one commenter wrote, summing up the general tone of support.
Another added:
“Sometimes it gets hot and stuffy in the room. I don’t blame her — do what you want!”
Others praised the creativity, calling the setup “genius” and “a stellar idea.”
“Cool night air, the sound of the ocean, and total peace? That’s a dream,” wrote one TikTok user.
“Honestly, jealous I didn’t think of it first,” added another.
A few even vowed to copy the idea on future sailings.
“My next cruise, I’m doing this too,” one person commented, while another joked, “Now I gotta book another cruise just to try this experience.”
But Not Everyone Was On Board
Still, the video sparked backlash toward the person who filmed and posted it — not the guest themselves.
“Why are you recording someone just minding their business?” asked one commenter.
“People really don’t know how to relax — or mind their own business,” another wrote.
Others called it out as an invasion of privacy, saying passengers should be able to enjoy their balcony without worrying about being filmed.
“Balconies might be visible from other cabins, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to post someone online without consent,” one user noted.
A Trend That’s Gaining Momentum
This isn’t the first time “balcony bedding” has surfaced online. Earlier videos have shown cruise guests dragging cabin mattresses or cots outside for some fresh-air lounging — from Allure of the Seas to Carnival Breeze and even Antarctic voyages.
Some travelers claim it helps them sleep better, reduces “sea legs,” and makes for unbeatable views.
“I slept on the balcony on my last cruise — best night of sleep ever,” wrote one commenter.
Of course, a few practical voices weighed in with caution.
“It’s relaxing, sure — but I wouldn’t want to sleep on that same mattress next time,” one user noted, pointing out sanitation concerns.
Privacy and Etiquette at Sea
While cruise lines don’t have specific policies against moving furniture onto balconies, filming other passengers without consent remains a gray area. Ships are semi-public spaces, and even private balconies can be visible from neighboring decks.
The viral debate, however, seems to have less to do with cruise rules and more to do with human behavior.
“How sad can your life be that you’re on a cruise and still judging strangers instead of enjoying yourself?” one viewer commented.
Whether you call it creativity or controversy, one thing is certain: this balcony nap sparked more conversation than most full itineraries.
