Borealis: The Evolution of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines | Full Documentary [2026]

One remarkable cruise ship. Two very different lives. A story of heritage, transformation and the future of traditional cruising. After 12 months of planning, research, filming and production, Sail Away Magazine proudly presents Borealis: The Evolution of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, an original feature-length documentary presented and narrated by renowned naval architect Dr Stephen Payne OBE.

Proudly sponsored by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, this documentary takes viewers on an extraordinary journey through the history of one of Britain's most recognisable cruise ships, exploring her transformation, the people who bring her to life and the evolution of a cruise line with a remarkable maritime heritage.

Originally built as Rotterdam for Holland America Line and entering service in 2000, the ship spent two decades sailing the world's oceans before embarking on an entirely new chapter. Acquired by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in 2020, she was renamed Borealis, becoming part of a fleet celebrated for its smaller ships, imaginative itineraries and traditional approach to cruising.

But what does it take to give a cruise ship a second life? And how does a family-run cruise line balance its proud heritage with the changing expectations of today's passengers?

With exclusive behind-the-scenes access, spectacular drone cinematography, archive material and fascinating interviews, we explore the story of Borealis from an entirely new perspective.

Join Dr Stephen Payne OBE as we venture deep inside the ship, meet the people responsible for her operation and discover the extraordinary work that goes into maintaining and operating a modern cruise ship.

From the bridge to the engine room, from the entertainment venues to the shipyard, we explore the engineering, dedication, personalities and traditions that make Borealis such a special vessel.

Our cameras also follow Borealis into dry dock at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam, offering a fascinating look at the maintenance, technical expertise and considerable planning required to keep a cruise ship operating safely and efficiently.

Whether you've sailed aboard Borealis, remember her days as Amsterdam, are a loyal Fred. Olsen guest or simply have a passion for cruise ships and maritime history, we hope this documentary offers a fascinating insight into a ship with an extraordinary story to tell.
