River Cruises Are Running Out of Water... What's Plan B?

Published August 17, 2026

Description

Europe’s rivers are running dangerously low on water, and river cruise vacations are being disrupted by drought, extreme weather and changing water levels. So, what happens when your river cruise can no longer cruise?

In this episode, we investigate the growing challenge facing the European river cruise industry as low water levels on the Danube and Rhine force cruise lines to change itineraries, move embarkation ports, swap ships, introduce lengthy coach transfers and, in some cases, cancel cruises altogether.

We look at how major river cruise lines including Viking, Uniworld, Scenic, Avalon Waterways, AmaWaterways and Riviera Travel are responding, including the extraordinary logistics behind ship swaps and contingency itineraries.

But there's a much bigger question: is this simply another unusually dry European summer, or could drought and increasingly extreme weather make river cruising less predictable in the years ahead?

We examine historic water levels on the Rhine, previous major drought and flooding events, the rapid growth of Europe's river cruise fleet, and what the evidence tells us about the challenges the industry could face in the future.

We also investigate what all of this means for passengers. If you've paid thousands for a river cruise but significant parts of your journey are replaced by coach transfers, are you still getting the holiday you paid for? And if your river cruise is cancelled or substantially changed because of low water, what compensation or refund might you actually be entitled to?

This isn't about suggesting river cruising is unsafe. Most European river cruises continue to operate successfully, and cruise lines have developed increasingly sophisticated ways of dealing with changing river conditions. Instead, we're asking whether the industry — and passenger expectations — may now have to adapt.

💬 Would you accept several days of coach travel if low water prevented your river cruise from continuing? Or would you expect compensation? Let us know in the comments.
