Before a cruise ship enters or leaves many ports around the world, a highly trained maritime pilot climbs aboard and takes control of navigating the ship through some of the most challenging waters imaginable.

Picture this… It’s dark. The sea is rough. A small pilot boat races alongside a cruise ship weighing well over 100,000 tonnes. The pilot must step from one moving vessel to another using nothing more than a rope ladder hanging down the side of the ship.

One wrong step could have devastating consequences. And that’s before the real job even begins.

They then have to guide these enormous ships through narrow channels, busy harbours and constantly changing conditions, often with just metres to spare. Every port is different, every tide is different, and every arrival presents its own challenges.

It’s a job that requires incredible skill, experience and nerves of steel, yet most passengers never even know it’s happening.

We sat down with a maritime pilot to find out what the job is really like, the biggest dangers they face, and some of the incredible stories from a career spent boarding some of the world’s largest ships.
