Has Carnival Forgotten How to Build Great Cruise Ships?

Carnival Cruise Line has unveiled its biggest cruise ship ever... but is Carnival Destiny really the future of cruising, or just a bigger version of what we've already seen?

In this episode of On Watch, Jay takes a closer look at Carnival Destiny, the first ship in Carnival Cruise Line's brand-new Ace Class, and asks whether the cruise line has genuinely pushed the boundaries of cruise ship design, or simply built a larger ship capable of carrying even more passengers.

Carnival has highlighted more balcony cabins, over 4.5 acres of glass, a redesigned lanai deck and promises that 70% of onboard venues will be brand new. But is that enough to compete with the innovation we've seen from Royal Caribbean's Icon Class, Celebrity Cruises' Edge Class, or even Carnival Corporation's own engineering masterpiece, Queen Mary 2?

Using published information, passenger space ratios and currently available specifications, Jay explores whether Carnival Destiny represents real innovation, or whether the cruise line has become too focused on capacity and commercial returns at the expense of creating truly memorable cruise ships.
