CRUISE SHIP RESIDENTS ORDERED OFF THEIR FLOATING HOMES!
Imagine spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to live aboard a cruise ship, only to be told you have just hours to pack your belongings and leave.
That's exactly the situation facing residents aboard Villa Vie Odyssey, the former Fred. Olsen cruise ship Braemar, after Villa Vie Residences suspended operations in Cambodia, claiming it could no longer secure the fuel needed to continue sailing.
But is there more to this story than rising fuel prices?
Back in November 2024, Sail Away Magazine questioned whether Villa Vie Residences was capable of delivering its ambitious promise of long-term residential cruising. Almost two years later, the ship is laid up, residents face an uncertain future, and serious questions are being asked about the company's finances.
In this episode of On Watch, we investigate the unfolding Villa Vie Odyssey crisis, including reports of a $3 million emergency loan request to residents, further appeals for funding, the company's expansion plans, and founder Mikael Petterson's previous involvement with the ill-fated Life at Sea Cruises venture.
We also hear about the experiences of residents who have made Odyssey their home and examine the questions Villa Vie's management needs to answer.
Was this crisis foreseeable? Could more have been done to protect residents? And will Villa Vie Odyssey ever sail again?
